  2. I might not be an expert but seated (key – knee at 90 degrees) and standing calf raises engage or at least emphasise different muscles in calves, soleus and gastrocnemius respectively. So you still need both of these exercises as they are not strictly substitutes. For seated one the machine with plates is preferable as it allows a lot of weight and maximum ROM, especially necessary if you do something like yoga and have a big rom in your feet. Correct me if I'm wrong.
